Build Your Own Bookbinding Tools: Plans for a Home Bindery
If you enjoy woodworking and want to make your own books, these are tools you can build in your workshop and keep using for years. Our bookbinding plans cover a book press, sewing frame, book vise, and cutting plough—four traditional tools that help with pressing, sewing, holding, and trimming a book.
In the video below, we put them to work on a particularly fitting project: binding a book containing the plans for the tools themselves. You can see how each tool contributes to the finished book, then choose the plan that suits your workshop.

The book press: a tool you use throughout the process

The press is the tool we keep coming back to. Folded signatures go into it to flatten the sheets; the sewn text block returns to it; and the book goes back under pressure as the glued parts come together. In this project, those repeated pressings help turn a stack of folded paper into a flat, neatly finished book.
Our press design uses half-blind dovetails for strength and a heavy-duty press screw with single-lead Acme threads. It is a substantial woodworking project with a practical job in the bindery.
The plan includes cut lists, detailed step-by-step instructions, and diagrams and images to clarify the build. You’ll need a press screw and a metal plate in addition to your woodworking materials and equipment.

The sewing frame: hold the cords while you sew

A sewing frame holds the support cords under tension while you stitch the folded sections of the book around them. The cords become part of the book’s structure, connecting the signatures as you add them one by one.
In the video, we use lighter cotton cord for this thin book. Watching the sewing makes the frame’s purpose easy to understand: the support stays in place while your hands work with the needle, thread, and paper.
The design has a base, upright wooden screws, and an adjustable horizontal bar. The plan includes cut lists, detailed instructions, and SVG files for cutting pieces with a CNC if you choose that approach. You’ll need access to a 1½-inch tap and die set to make the wooden screws.

The book vise: hold the text block securely

Once the signatures are sewn, you have a text block—but there is still lining, gluing, and trimming to do. The vise holds the book securely while you work on it. In our project, it gives us a stable setup for working on the spine and preparing the edges for trimming.
This is also the other half of the cutting system. Turn the vise around and its groove guides the cutting plough. The two tools are designed to work together, and both builds are included in one plan.
The cutting plough: trim clean, even edges

The plough trims the edges of the text block while the vise holds it firmly. Guided along the vise, its blade cuts the paper into a clean, even edge—one of the details that makes a handmade book feel finished.
The combined vise-and-plough plan includes cut lists, detailed instructions, diagrams, and images for both projects. Along with wood and woodworking equipment, you’ll need a 1½-inch tap and die set for the wooden screws and a block plane blade for the plough.
